Harry Gordon Trophy & 2011 Qualifier

 

Matt Barnicoat (Shanklin & Sandown) has won this year's IWGU Harry Gordon Trophy played at Freshwater Bay Golf Club. The event which is open to Island and Club champions over the last 10 years is combined with an open event as part of the qualification system for the Mens Golf Team for the Nat West Island Games 2011. Golf at the IOW 2011 games will be held over both Freshwater Bay and Shanklin & Sandown courses and Freshwater's Nat Riddett took a huge stride towards selection by producing a 1 under par round of 68 moving him up to 3rd in the selection list. Scott Meek (Osborne) was just one shot back (69) in 2nd place on the day and has also moved into contention at 9th on the rankings with 5 more events to be played.

 

Riddett had started well reaching the turn in one over par (35) but three birdies in a row from the 11th brought him into the lead and apart from a dropped shot at the last he did not fall away on the way home. Meek's round included an Eagle 3 at the par 5, 12th hole and having turned in a one under 33 he may have been well ahead but 2 double bogey's in the back nine undoubtedly cost him the top spot on the day.

 

Barnicoat who has previously been the champion of Ryde but now plays at Shanklin & Sandown was part of the last Island Games Team at Aland in 2009. He Started badly and was 4 over par after 5 holes but having steadied the ship he managed 2 birdies and just one more dropped shot to finish with a 72.

 

Games selection events will continue at the IWGU championships in June and will continue until a final qualifying event in April next year which will replicate the format in the games by playing a round at each of the two courses.
