IW v Hants Colts 2011

After last years close match with Hampshire when the Mainland side won by a single point, this year the Isle of Wight have been heavily defeated in the annual match against the Hampshire Colts side at Shanklin and Sandown Club.

The morning Foursomes started well as Island Games pair; Brandon Thompson and Darren Masterton team up well and came back from 3 down at the turn to win convincingly 3&1 but in the other matches Hampshire picked up the points and only a Half from Rich Harrison and Matt Barnicoat gave the Island hosts some hope keeping the match close at 3.5 to 1.5 at lunch.

However in the Afternoon singles the Hampshire team pulled further ahead. Many of the matches were close with only 1 or 2 holes in each many matches either way. Masterton completed an impressive double winning 2&1 but 4 other matches which had been tight throughout, all went to Hampshire down the stretch as George Foreman, Stu Bancroft and Chris Reed all lost 2&1 whilst Scott Meek lost on the last to a finishing birdie flourish from Hampshire's Jamie Mist. Rich Harrison claimed a second half of the day to claim the only other points for the Island.

Perhaps the performance of the day came from Hampshire's Hayden Reay who finished his match early being 6 under par when it ended after starting Birdie, Birdie Eagle. Perhaps I should just say, well played, but here's to next year.

Final Result: IOW 3, Hampshire 12.
