Isle of Wight Golf Union Championships 2016

Isle of Wight Golf Union 2016 Championships played on 15^th ,16^th and 17^th July 2016. Around ninety players competing for several trophies.

First event of the championship, the Friday Stableford warmup competition the Brabazon Trophy an eighteen-hole event. Winner Barry Humphries (Shanklin & Sandown) 40 points,second George Faulkner (Freshwater) 39 points on countback over third placed Joe Goodey.

Vice Presidents Challenge Trophy eighteen hole medal, won by Ben Thruman  (Freshwater) 67,Second Ben Guy (Shanklin & Sandown) 67 and third Connor Knight (Shanklin & Sandown) 67.

Over 55 winner Brian Voller (Shanklin & Sandown) and the handicap PM winner Darren Masterson(Osbourne).

Goodall Trophy, 36 hole handicap competition won by Jordon Sundborg  (Shanklin & Sandown) with 68 and 69 total 137 shot behind George Faulkner (Freshwater)  69 and 69 total 138 nett and third Dave Mctoldridge (Shanklin & Sandown) 69 & 70 total 139.

Haworth Trophy, 36 hole scratch event Jordon Sundborg  (Shanklin & Sandown)  67 & 68 total 135,four shots behind Josh Oddy (Ryde) 70 & 69 total 139 , third place Darren Masterton (Osbourne)73,67 140 and fourth Nat Riddett  (Shanklin & Sandown)  68, & 77 total 142.

Team Shield won by  Sandown and Shanklin Golf team consisted of Nat Riddett, Jordan Sundborg, Dan Mew and Joseph Goodey  

Great double victory for Jordan Sundborg in the scratch and handicap. Third and final day involved singles matchplay between the four best placed in the Haworth Trophy between first placed Jordan Sundborg against fourth placed Nat Riddett and second semi-finalists second placed Josh Oddy and third placed Darren Masterton.

After epic battles in the semis finals, finalist Nat Riddett and Darren Masterton battled in the afternoon in warm and humid condition. Nat Riddett one up after nine holes, however Darren Masterton took the championship title on the last hole.

Trophies presented by newly appointed I.W.G.U president, Victor Treadwell thanked Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club for allowing I.W.G.U to hold the event.

 Isle of Wight Golf Union would especially like to thank Tony Child for refereeing the match play events. Julie Sundborg for conducting a raffle and raising £100 towards the Island Games team.
